After classes today a bunch of us stopped by a local bar to have a drink before heading home to our families for the night. Of course everyone was drinking Crystal – the Peruvian beer. It comes in large bottles that you buy then pour into tiny plastic cups to share with others. Consider yourself lucky if it is remotely cold. I’ve become happy just to not have it be warm.
[On a side note – when I was a kid and I’d go out to dinner with my family, my grandpa used to always order warm beer. He’d ask if the had any that weren’t in the refrigerator yet, maybe in the basement or some back room. The wait staff always looked at him like he was crazy. Now I understand why. But I still don’t get why he liked it hot. Any idea mom??]
Tiffany and I stepped it up a notch this wonderful Friday evening; we skipped the beer and went straight for the box wine. The 1L box of “Clos” red is actually pretty good and really cheap. I was totally feeling it after just one glass, which made for a really interesting combi ride home. (Combi= dangerously scary mini buses –more to come on those later).
After dinner Tiffany and I went over to Alex’s house to watch Shrek 3 because her family had it on DVD (they have every movie here pirated on DVD). As soon as we walked into her room, Tiff’s arm flew up in the air to point out a lizard that was scurrying across the wall. None of us were about to touch the thing but there was no way Alex was letting us leave it there. Luckily we’ve got some tough mommas in this country. Before long Alex’s mom came in with a bucket and broom and somehow managed to maneuver the guy out of the room.
Finally, we got all ready to watch the movie. The three of us were all cozied up on Alex’s bed, sitting on her sleeping bag when we finally started the movie. It wasn’t until about 10 seconds later that we realized… crap – the whole thing was in Spanish. Ugggh. Shrek in Spanish? I don’t think so. So instead we caught ourselves up on old episodes of Gray’s Anatomy. That show is addicting, its like the Lay’s potato chips, you can’t watch just one…
